Abstract

The oldest medieval beast epic was translated literally into English prose for the first time in this volume, with Latin on facing pages. The introduction and commentary by Zeydel familiarize the reader with the history and value of the text and constituted a new approach, arguing for the inclusion of Latin literature composed in what is now Germany in the history of German literature.

Abstract

Abstract

The nineteenth-century antiquarian Thomas Wright (1810-77) was a prolific scholar, editor and bibliographer. His two-volume anthology of twelfth-century Latin poetry, first published in 1872, is the fullest available and this reissue will be especially useful to scholars of medieval schools, religious life and satire, and those interested in medieval literature's relationship with the Latin classics. It remains the only published edition of important poems by Geoffrey of Winchester, Hugh the Chanter, Reginald of Canterbury, Serlo of Bayeux and Gualo Britto. Volume 1 contains Nigel Witeker's two most important satirical works: his beast epic Speculum stultorum and his Contra curiales. Also included are John of Salisbury's Entheticus ad policraticum and John of Hauville's Architrenius, which describes the sorrowful journey of a fictitious mourner through the twelfth-century church, court and schools.

Abstract

Back in 1963, when a conference on Horace was organised at Oudpelgeest (The Netherlands), Harry C. Schnur chose to comment upon Horace's famous poem Exegi monumentum aere perennius. Not unlike the Roman poet, Schnur was driven by one of mankind's strongest stimuli, the craving for immortality. No doubt the same attitude of mind made him meticulously keep together every possible line written by, or concerning, himself: copies of articles, books, translations, notes for his courses, poems, letters to editors of newspapers, files with clippings, were all for him more treasured than incunabula, rare books or precious furniture. Wartime conditions and a great many removals from Germany to England, thence to Holland, back again to England, thence to the U.S.A., back to Germany and then finally to the safe harbour of Switzerland, caused the loss of some book-cases, which left his collection incomplete, but still very impressive.

Abstract

In 1521, the young Polish diplomat Nicolaus Hussovianus was watching the bullfights at a papal celebration in Rome. He remarked that the spectacle reminded him of the bison hunts he had witnessed as a young man in the Polish-Lithuanian woods, and his employer then asked Hussovianus to write a poem about the bison hunts, to accompany the gift of a stuffed bison for Pope Leo X, an avid hunter. Song of the Bison is the first complete English translation of Hussovianus's Latin poem, which is claimed as a national epic by Lithuania, Belarus, and Poland. The exciting poem discusses not only Hussovianus's own experience in hunting and observing the European bison, but also the political, social, religious, and aesthetic developments of sixteenth-century Europe, and ends with an urgent plea for unity among European states threatened by foreign invasions.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Dutch Golden Age poet Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) was a remarkable figure: in addition to writing poetry, he composed music; was secretary to two Princes of Orange, Frederick Henry and William II; and became a friend to John Donne, Rembrandt, Descartes, and many other notable people of his time. In this book, Peter Davidson and Adriaan van der Weel offer a broad selection of Huygens's poems and provide excellent translations for those written in Dutch, Latin, and a number of other languages revealing both Huygens literary talent and his remarkable linguistic range.
